BHA welcomes new fruit and veg pledge

“We will be encouraging members to follow suit?

The BHA welcomes the announcement by Public Health Minister, Anna Soubry, that more fruit and vegetables will be added to ready-meals, while supermarket fruit and vegetable sections will be expanded as part of a new drive to encourage the 5-a-day habit.

The move comes as part of the latest Responsibility Deal pledge, which aims to encourage action across the food industry to help people eat more fruit and vegetables.

John Dyson, BHA?s food and technical affairs adviser, says that on behalf of its members, the association had helped the government develop the fruit and vegetable pledge and it welcomed its launch.

?Food service suppliers such as Brakes and CH&Co have already signed the pledge and we will be encouraging other members to follow suit.

?This is about our industry making a united effort to help improve consumers understanding and habits around eating five portions of fruit and veg every day.?

Eating five portions of fruit and vegetable a day helps to lower the risk of serious health problems, such as heart disease and some cancers, but figures show that two thirds of people still don?t eat enough.
