Wednesday morning, 10 October: At 9.50 hrs precisely, as scheduled, the first aircraft pushed back from the new Pier A-Plus at Frankfurt Airport. Aboard the Lufthansa Airbus A380 ?Z?rich?, operating under flight number LH454, were 466 passengers bound for San Francisco. This was the first of a total of 13 flight departures scheduled for Wednesday.
The new terminal area, which will be used exclusively by Lufthansa and its partners, has gone into operation on schedule, after almost four years of construction. Now that the A-Plus Concourse is operational, Frankfurt Airport will be able to handle an additional six million passengers per year.
Shorter distances, faster transfer processes and modern lounges
Many transfer processes at Lufthansa?s main hub will be speeded up, thanks to the new A-Plus terminal extension. In future, for example, all flights to the USA will be handled in Area A, and the minimum connection time for flights to and from Europe will be lowered from 60 to 45 minutes. In addition, more aircraft will be able to dock directly onto the terminal and will not have to park at remote apron positions. That is more convenient for passengers as they will not have to be transferred to the terminal by bus. Furthermore, with five new lounges, Lufthansa is also considerably expanding the floor area of its lounges at Frankfurt Airport.
