After weeks of travelling, the Olympic Torch will make its final journey in the city of London – starting on July 20th, eventmagazine.co.uk reports.
The Torch will spend seven days trekking around London starting at the Tower of London before hopping aboard the Queen’s Rowbarge, Gloriana, on July 27th; with a total of 982 torchbearers set to carry the flame.
The Torch will be making its way past a number of event venues on its journey, as well as hitching a ride on a number of London’s attractions – like the London Eye and Centre Court at Wimbledon. Furthermore, Olympians James Cracknell and Daley Thompson will have the privilege of lifting the torch on its journey through London, reports telegraph.co.uk.
Sebastian Coe, chair of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG), has thanked each and every person who has ‘cheered on the torchbearers right around the UK’. Hugh Robertson, sport and Olympics minister, also expressed his gratitude.
Robertson said: “The torch relay has received a rousing reception from the British public over the last two months, with millions of people lining the streets to support the local hero torchbearers as they passed by some of Britain’s most iconic landmarks and landscapes.
“Now the Flame is on the home straight. Its arrival in London and journey through the capital marks the final countdown to what will be a great Games,” he added.
