The American sprinter ? who won 4x400m gold in Barcelona in 1992, 200m and 400m gold in Atlanta in 1996, and 400m gold in Sydney in 2000 ? was the first Torchbearer of the day, carrying the Flame at sunrise.
“It was a great experience to carry the torch around the iconic Stonehenge,” he said afterwards. “This was incredible, just a really incredible, magic moment.”
The Flame later travelled through Salisbury, Dorchester and Lyme Regis on its way to Weymouth, which will host the sailing events during the 2012 Olympic Games.
On arrival at Portland Harbour, Torchbearer Katrina Hughes ? who narrowly missed out on selection for London 2012 in the two-person 470 sailing class ? passed the Flame to two-time Olympic gold medal-winning yachtsman Rodney Pattisson, who sailed with it across the bay before passing it to 20-year-old community worker Ryan Hope, who was waiting in a rowing gig to take it to Weymouth beach.
Ryan then handed the Flame to charity volunteer Di Ludlow, who carried it along the beach into the Evening Celebration, which featured music from Wretch 32.
