A new global sustainability standard for events, ISO20121, has been launched to coincide with its first ever users – the London 2012 organising team.
The International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) standard adds several new elements to the incredibly popular British Standard (BS) 8901, used by event venues and organisers throughout the UK, says citmagazine.co.uk.
Such elements include a greater focus on the context in which the event organisation exists, more explicit risk identification, and greater interoperability between other ISO management standards.
It is believed that as a result of ISO20121, event planners will be able to cut costs, carbon emissions and waste even further.
The London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) is among one of the first to adopt the standard, which also probes organisational issues such as event venue selection, recycling, transportation, food strategies and lasting business legacies.
David Stubbs, head of sustainability at LOCOG, says that the sustainability of the Games has been greatly improved by adopting ISO20121.
Howard Kerr, chief executive of British Standards Institution, meanwhile adds on eventindustrynews.co.uk: “Over the next few years as sustainability becomes an inherent factor in all businesses, this standard will provide the event industry with an opportunity to lead.
“We hope that future initiatives, small or large, will be inspired by the good work started by LOCOG in partnership with BSI in this important area of sustainability”.
