A high volume of holiday requests is likely to plague HR departments as employees get their leave in early in order to watch the Games, according to a report by the Chartered Institute of Payroll Professionals.
Whether people are attending event venues to watch the Games on a big screen or actually hold tickets to the event, the Olympic Games are proving to be one of the most highly anticipated spectacles of recent years.
As such, nearly one in six workers (14 per cent) plan to take time off to attend the Games. Furthermore, one in 10 workers said their employer is allowing flexible working practices to attend the Games, reports hrmagazine.co.uk.
Around 10.3 per cent said their employer is permitting flexible working so that staff can watch the Games on television, reports wsandb.co.uk, while 11.5 per cent of employees claim their firm is granting flexible leave so they can volunteer at the Games.
Lindsay Melvin, chief executive of the CIPP, commented on the trend: “Attending the Olympics is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for many people. It is not surprising to discover that so many Brits will be taking time off to watch the Games in their home country.
“It is also good to hear that employers are showing their support for the Olympics by offering flexible working arrangements so that staff can attend, watch or volunteers at the Games,” she added.
