TUI Travel PLC is lead sponsor at Taking Responsibility for Tourism conference

TUI Travel is pleased to be the lead sponsor of the Taking Responsibility for Tourism conference held today at South Africa House, London. TUI Travel will also reveal its new three-year goal for sustainability in destinations at the event.

This landmark one-day conference is taking place 10 years after the first international conference on Responsible Tourism in Destinations which was held in South Africa in 2002 alongside the Johannesburg World Summit on Sustainable Development.

Speakers at the Taking Responsibility for Tourism conference will reflect on progress since 2002 and declare priorities for responsible tourism over the next 10 years.

TUI Travel speakers will be taking part in panel discussions. Jane Ashton, Director of Group Sustainable Development is discussing the outbound industry?s contribution to sustainability and Garry Wilson, Product and Purchasing Director TUI UK & Nordics will be discussing who?s responsible for sustainable tourism.

At the conference TUI Travel will reveal its new three-year sustainability goal for its supply chain, to deliver 10 million ?greener and fairer? holidays over the next 3 years.

The destinations goal is underpinned by several accommodation supply chain commitments:

Our differentiated hotels will achieve an average 24kWh and 400 litres for energy and water per person per night

50% of our differentiated hotels will have achieved an international environmental management standard

All differentiated hotels will have achieved Travelife certification or equivalent

We will feature over 2000 ?Mainstream? hotels certified as more sustainable

TUI Travel?s full three-year sustainability strategy will be launched next month.

Jane Ashton, Director of Group Sustainable Development said, ?We are delighted to be the lead sponsor of the conference on ?Taking Responsibility for Tourism?, which has provided an important space in which to look back 10 years. The contrast with today is stark. Nowadays no one doubts the business case for responsible tourism at TUI Travel, where our vision is to make travel experiences special? with a firm commitment to sustainability. Responsible Leadership has become a core value for the company, and sustainability improvements are now integrated into our strategy and processes – to the benefit of our business, destinations and the environment. The challenges remain great, but we look forward to the future with confidence.??
