Work on a skywalk to the Horseshoe Casino could begin this summer

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Horseshoe Casino Cleveland could begin work this summer on a skywalk linking the casino and its parking garage.

The?Ohio Casino Control Commission?cleared the way Wednesday by endorsing financing that casino owner Rock Ohio Caesars would use partly to buy the Higbee Building, where the Horseshoe is located. The agency reviews major transactions to ensure the company can absorb the cost.

The $5 million skywalk — a 170-foot, glass-enclosed walkway — would cross the intersection of Ontario Street and Prospect Avenue and connect with the second floor of the Higbee Building on Cleveland’s Public Square.

Rock Ohio spokeswoman Jennifer Kulczycki said construction will probably start this summer after the company wraps up the financing and closes on purchase of the former department store from Forest City Enterprises.

The operator of the year-old casino believes the skywalk will spur more business and increase revenue?that some analysts have found disappointing.

Rock Ohio officials say the bridge will provide shelter from the weather and ease the minds of customers who worry about downtown traffic or perceive the area as unsafe. Ohio’s three other casinos have attached parking garages, a company representative noted in addressing the state regulators.
