Travelling within Australia is becoming more competitive and considering the dollar?s current decline, domestic travel and expenditure is set to increase, according to results from a new study.

Tourism Research Australia has released the National Visitor Survey (NVS) for the March quarter 2013, with the Tourism & Transport Forum (TTF) highlighting the industry?s ability to deliver economic activity across the country, as the dollar eases.

The NVS results for March 2013 revealed overnight holiday trips rose 6.5 percent, nights by 11.1 percent and expenditure by 9.6 percent compared to the same quarter in 2012.

Overall visitor nights rose 4.3 percent for the 2013 March quarter.

?Domestic overnight travellers spent AU$13.3 billion in the March quarter – more than AU$1 billion dollars a week,? TTF chief executive Ken Morrison said.

?Overnight visitors spend money on accommodation, dining, shopping, transport, and visiting attractions in every part of the country, all year round, supporting 531,900 direct jobs and 283,000 businesses nationwide.?
