Inspiring Views in Vorarlberg

Vorarlberg enjoys a supreme location in Austria?s most western part, close to neighbouring Germany, Switzerland and Lichtenstein. Pleasantly small in size, Vorarlberg offers a stimulating mix of high-carat culture and dazzling natural scenery.

The landscapes between Lake Constance and the more than 2000m high peaks are a stunning sight. Towns and villages surprise with architectural highlights. Nowhere else does one find so many well-designed contemporary buildings in such a small area. Timber, glass and minimalist lines are the hallmarks of modern architecture. In recent years, many hotels have been given a facelift and now present themselves in contemporary style. Natural materials lend a touch of well-being to interior spaces. From the modern spa areas, glorious views of surrounding nature unfold. Beauty and sustainability are the guiding principles.

The cultural landscape is open to the world. The seasonal highlight is the annual Bregenz Festival in July/August. The floating stage on Lake Constance forms the backdrop for great operatic performances in spectacular scenery. The 2013 programme features yet another exquisite production ? director David Pountney bids farewell to Bregenz with his version of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart?s ?The Magic Flute?.

A string of award-winning inns and restaurants serve regional cuisine with a creative twist. Delicacies such as cheese, meat and sausage, fruit, vegetables and herbs, fruit juices and fine brandies are produced on small farms or in gourmet manufacturers, especially throughout the Bregenzerwald. Active holidaymakers head for mountain summits and dazzling lookouts in their walking boots, or in a more leisurely mode by cable car. Depending on the vantage point, sweeping views extend across the Alps over Lake Constance or to the gently undulating foothills. Up on the mountain, restaurants with panorama terraces or traditional alpine huts beckon to stay for a while. What better way to start the day than with a hearty mountain breakfast? Colour, form, weather: the world of mountains presents itself as lovely and dramatic as a piece of art. A number of hiking trails offer a closer look at nature, fauna or the traits of alpine farming. Some combine the enjoyment of nature with artistic impressions such as the Green Ring in Lech Z?rs am Arlberg ? hands-on evidence that Vorarlberg?s landscapes are cultural landscapes in the truest sense of the word.
