REYKJAVIK, Iceland–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Lonely Planet?and?CNN?have named Northern Iceland as one of the Top Ten European Destinations to visit in 2013, in a list compiled by?Lonely Planet?s?editors, local experts and wide-roaming authors from the US and London.

The Top 10 European Destinations of 2013 are 10 places in Europe that?Lonely Planet?thinks travelers should add to their wish lists for the coming year ? either destinations that are just starting to receive buzz, overlooked places that are poised to be the next traveler find, or old favorites that have timely and fresh reasons to visit this year.

North Iceland was named third on the list, with travelers being urged to venture away from the popular Golden Circle route to experience the ?charms of the North? including Iceland?s second city Akureyri, as well as the region?s ?dramatic geysers, lava fields and towering waterfalls.? Myvatn Nature Baths, an outdoor geothermal pool similar to the popular Blue Lagoon in Keflavik, was cited as another reason to visit the North. The chance of spotting the Northern Lights was also described as being higher than ?in even more northern parts of Scandinavia.?

Andy Murdock, US digital editor of?Lonely Planet,?comments: ?Few destinations seem to be attracting as much word-of-mouth love as Iceland right now. With a small window of affordability, popular Icelandic bands, mystery writers, and a seeming worldwide need for a long soak in a hot spring, Iceland seems to be on every traveler?s mind this year.?

Arnhei?ur J?hannsd?ttir, general manager of North Iceland Marketing Office, welcomes visitors to Northern Iceland. ?We are proud to hear that Lonely Planet has seen the potential in Northern Iceland, which is an area that has been growing in popularity during the past years. We have many of Iceland?s most popular natural attractions such as Dettifoss, Europe?s most powerful waterfall, and Gr?msey island, where travelers can cross the Arctic Circle. The area is versatile and has been attracting visitors during winter as well, when magical northern lights dance in the sky.?

Northern Iceland is accessible via flights from Reykjavik ? Akureyri with Air Iceland, which depart up to eight times per day. Prices start from as little as $67 each way.
