Chinese tourists may be the top source of tourism cash worldwide, according to the United Nations World Tourism Organization, but their average vacation budget is only a fraction of what Australians are expected to spend this year.
A new survey conducted by independent research firm Ipsos on behalf of travel planning website TripAdvisor found that Australians will save an average of $12,393 for travel in 2014, up from $10,528 in 2013. By comparison, U.S. travelers are expected to spend $8,272 this year, up slightly from $8,202 in 2013.
International travel, in particular, is on the rise in the U.S., according to TripAdvisor?s 2014 TripBarometer. Sixty-seven percent of those surveyed said they planned to travel abroad this year, up 14 percent, while 97 percent planned a domestic trip, compared to 95 percent in 2013.
?Exploration is back on the agenda, with more travelers planning international trips this year,? noted Marc Charron, president of TripAdvisor for business. ?Travelers are upping their budgets but they are looking for bargains, expecting their accommodation of choice to deliver on value. Special offers, complimentary amenities and exceptional service are all going to be important factors in swaying potential guests.?
Among global travelers, 77 percent plan to vacation internationally in 2014, a rise of 12 percent year-on-year, while domestic travel is up from 87 percent to 90 percent. Though many Europeans reported smaller travel budgets than in 2013, the global average climbed from $5,955 last year to $6,136 in 2014, thanks to dramatic rises in Asia, Africa and Latin America.
