IS asserts the horrible mass shooting with more than 50 dead for itself: A resort guest shot at participants of a music festival from his room on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort in Las Vegas. At his room, 10 rifles have been found.
For hotel operators, the question arises: Could such assassinations be prevented if hotel guests’ luggage is screened? Ulrich Jander, an German expert in hotel safety, points out a number of security gaps in the majority of hotel surgeries: “Anybody who would like to bring firearms into a hotel can do this, and it is often quite simple. Via provider entrances, rifles could be smuggled into laundry carts or food boxes – as a rule, these aren’t inspected at all or only superficially.“
The weapons inventory did not draw attention during housekeeping now needs to be revealed by the additional investigations in Las Vegas. Affected guests may simply barricade themselves in their rooms, drag heavy furniture from the door and hide in bathtubs (full of water) if needed. In accordance with Jander, proximity to windows is absolutely essential.
Following the IS assassination attempt on a Berlin Christmas market, they learned to shield event regions having heavy bollards. Now it is time to check hotel guests for possession of weapons.
The fact that resorts have now been intentionally shot out of a hotel is a brand new scenario.
