The British Hospitality Association has signed up to deliver a physical activity guidelines pledge in support of the government?s Responsibility Deal which aims to improve health levels.

New physical activity guidelines published by the four UK Chief Medical Officers cover early years, children and young people, adults, and older adults. This is the first time UK-wide physical activity guidelines have been produced and the first time guidelines have been issued in the UK for early years (under-fives) as well as sedentary behavior, for which there is now evidence that this is an independent factor in ill health.

The new guide? lines offer more flexibility for achieving the recommended levels of physical activity.

The guide lines have a renewed focus on being active every day and spell out recommended minimum levels of activity for each group:

  • Under Fives

180 minutes ? 3 hours ? each day, once a child is able to walk.

  • Children and young people (5-18)

60 minutes and up to several hours a day of moderate or vigorous intensity physical activity. Three days a week should include vigorous intensity activities that strengthen muscle and bone.

  • Adults (19-64 years old) and older people (65+)

150mins ? two and half hours ? each week of moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity (and adults should aim to do some physical activity every day). Muscle strengthening activity should also be included twice a week.

The Responsibility Deal pledges, launched on 15 March, represent an important step forward for public health. Actions will be taken across a series of food, alcohol, physical activity and health at work pledges.

The BHA has agreed to contribute to the communication and promotion of the Chief Medical Officers? revised physical activity guidelines.
