Scottish Open Golf, Royal Lytham Prepares for Open Championship

Golf Vacations UK ? Scottish Open success for Jeev Milkha Singh at Castle Stuart. Players comment on the tough course at Royal Lytham for this week?s Open Championship. Tee times still available at St Andrews Old Course for 2012.

The Aberdeen Asset management Scottish Open was won on Sunday at the Castle Stuart Links, by the Indian Golfer Jeev Milkha Singh, when he defeated Italy?s Francesco Molinari in a play off at the 18th hole. The weather for the final round of the championship made the course more difficult for scoring than in the earlier rounds when Molinari broke the course record with a 62.

Singh said, “I would say I’m a very fortunate man, coming from India I’m not used to links courses but since coming to Europe I’ve played a lot of links courses. This victory has given me a lot of confidence and I can build on that. I’m feeling fit and good things are on their way in the future.?

Singh will be in the field for the Open Championship at Royal Lytham, which commences on the 19th July. Tiger Woods is the bookies’ favourite; however after taking one look at the course on Sunday, Woods labelled the course “unplayable” saying, ?Oh my God, you can?t get out of it (referring to the rough). We have always had the wispy stuff, but the bottom six inches is so lush its almost unplayable in some places.?

Royal Lytham is one of the toughest courses on the Open Championship rota and if the wind blows, as is the forecast, it will become a monster. High scores are going to be commonplace this week if the weather does not change for the better. Even so, record crowds are expected as the course is so centrally situated for visitors from both Scotland and England, also it is more accessible for Ireland?s golfers due to the close ferry and flight connections.

Royal Lytham is one of only many golfing gems on the Lancashire and Merseyside coasts. There are not many areas where you can play world class courses varying from seaside to inland clubs with hilly terrain. Lancashire and Merseyside have top class courses along the coastline where you will find some of the world?s most renowned links – Royal Lytham & St Anne?s, which has hosted the prestigious Open Tournament 10 times, St Anne?s Old Links, where the professionals go to qualify, and Fairhaven Golf Course which will be hosting the Junior Open Championship from 16-18 July.

Several of these courses and other less tricky ones are open to the public and packages including tee times and accommodations can be reserved through Golf vacations UK who are based only a short distance from the area.

If golfers are willing to explore a little further south on England’s Golf Coast they can take advantage of the highest concentration of championship golf in the world include Royal Birkdale and Royal Liverpool (Hoylake) which are on the Open Championship rota and also the lesser known gems such as Formby, Southport and Ainsdale and Hillside which was the venue some years ago for the English Open.

Travelling time down this coast from Royal Lytham to the southernmost point of Royal Liverpool is only 1 hour 20 minutes, with all the golf courses mentioned, and more, en route.

The Open Championship will return to St Andrews in 2015 and St Andrews Old Course public tee times are sold out; however Golf Vacations UK still have availability on the course for August and October 2012, in packages which include 3 nights in St Andrews at the 5 star Old Course Hotel, Golf Resort & Spa. These packages are available through Golf Vacations UK who are members of the Scottish Incoming Golf Tour Operators Association and who work together with the Scottish Tourist Board, VisitScotland.
