Trendy clubs, “young” galleries, modern architecture and stylish shops are as much Vienna as the state opera, concert halls, lavish museums, splendid buildings and nostalgic shops.
This mixture can also be seen in fashion and design ? or better to say, in the exhibitions taking place over the next weeks. For more than 2500 years, textiles have been preserved in the Hallstatt Salt Mines. Even the colors have been preserved. With special analysis and experiments, the different pieces have been rebuilt. The result: probably one of the oldest textiles in the world, to be seen for the first time at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. www.khm.at

Trendy shopping
Now that you have seen the (very, very) old ?designs? and some of the latest trends, it is time for the real thing: shopping!
The young fashion designers in Vienna have an unmistakable style. Thomas Kirchgrabner mixes a garish flair with tradition. Lena Hoschek combines petticoats and traditional costumes with punk. Susanne Bisovsky tailors her extravagant collections from folkloric materials. The 7th district in particular is Vienna’s mecca for the latest fashion trends. This is where fashion lovers will discover countless shops with a large selection of clothes, shoes and accessories in all kinds of styles.? And because the little shops off the trails can be hard to find, special shopping tours will guide you to these hidden gems. On 7tm’s guided shopping tours, an experienced stylist will lead you through this ?bercool seventh heaven. 7tm also offers tours with a focus on sustainability and a wedding dress show for brides to be. From jewellery to clothes, from home accessories to cosmetics, the agenda even includes Austrian culinary delights, with tastings of products like marmalade, vinegar and chocolate. www.7tm.at
Time for a break
Shopping can be hard work. Therefore, a coffee break to ?recharge? your batteries is a must. And there is no better place than Caf? Drechsler on Naschmarkt. The legendary caf? has been given a stylish makeover by famous British designer Sir Terence Conran. It still retains its popularity as a place to meet and enjoy Viennese cuisine and excellent coffee. And the best thing about Caf? Drechsler: it is open virtually round the clock! ?Visitors can enjoy a mellow pianist by day and live DJ music several nights a week. So whether you visit it for an afternoon coffee or an early ?breakfast? after a night out, Caf? Drechsler is the place to be. www.cafedrechsler.at
