American and American Eagle Employees to Participate in the First ‘Walk While You Work’ Campaign
Customers Can Earn AAdvantage Miles for Contributing to ‘Miles for the Cure’
American Airlines and American Eagle are observing Breast Cancer Awareness Month by continuing their commitment to providing funds to help find cures for breast cancer. Throughout October, money will be raised by the airlines and their people for the American Airlines Promise Grant, a study of inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) at The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Morgan Welch Clinic in Houston.
IBC is one of the deadliest forms of breast cancer. IBC can be difficult to diagnose, is extremely aggressive and typically spreads rapidly. The goal of the Promise Grant research is to lead to earlier and more accurate diagnosis of IBC and to provide the first therapies specifically designed to treat it, both of which are critically important to improve the overall survival of patients with this type of cancer.
American pledged to raise $8 million over eight years to fund the grant. American’s support this month is focused solely on funding the grant.
“Raising funds to support breast cancer research is a priority for American Airlines, and it is one of our primary areas of community support,” said Jane Stancliffe, a breast cancer survivor and American’s Managing Director ? Payroll. “Breast cancer has touched so many of us in various ways. That is why our commitment to funding the Promise Grant is so important ? in hopes of ensuring that other women in our lives aren’t affected by this disease.”
American and American Eagle employees can choose to observe Breast Cancer Awareness Month by participating in the first “Walk While You Work” campaign, being held systemwide throughout October. Wearing pink wristbands and embroidered ribbons, American’s people will walk the equivalent of a 5K (3.1 miles) during the course of their normal work activities this month to raise money for breast cancer research and awareness for the fight against the disease. Net proceeds will go directly toward funding American’s Promise Grant.
American is supporting breast cancer research in a number of other ways this month, including special pink-themed menus that are available to Admirals Club? guests at select Admirals Club lounges across the country, where 10 percent of the sales of pink items will go toward the $1 million annual fundraising goal. American has also renewed its successful Miles for the Cure? fundraising program, which will reward donors through the end of October with 15 American Airlines AAdvantage? miles for every dollar they contribute to Susan G. Komen for the Cure?, with a minimum $25 donation. Customers can give the gift of travel and support breast cancer research at the same time, as American will donate $5 to Komen for the Cure for every $50 of travel purchased via the American Airlines Gift Card.
