Lufthansa Group on course for further growth in passenger numbers

The airlines in the Lufthansa Group continued their course for further growth in passenger numbers: From January until September 2012 Lufthansa German Airlines, SWISS and Austrian Airlines carried a total of 78.8 million passengers, an increase of 3.5 per cent on the year-earlier level. Capacity was up by 1.8 per cent, while sales increased by 3.3 per cent. The seat load factor in the Group?s passenger traffic rose accordingly on the prior-year level by 1.2 percentage points to a total of 79.3 per cent.
Lufthansa German Airlines had a share of 57.2 million in the total number of passengers carried by the Group?s airlines. This means 3.6 per cent more passengers opted to fly with Lufthansa in the first nine months than in the same term last time round. The strongest increase in passenger numbers was recorded in traffic regions Middle East and Africa and Europe, whereas the number of passengers transported remained on the year-earlier-level in Asia/Pacific and America. Capacity at Lufthansa was up by 1.6 per cent in the first three quarters of this year, mainly due to the use of larger aircraft. At the same time Lufthansa was able to sell more passenger seat kilometers than were additionally offered in the first nine months. Sales increased by 2.6 per cent, thus raising the average seat load factor of the aircraft by 0.8 percentage points to 78.7 per cent.
SWISS transported around 12.9 million passengers in the nine-month term in 2012, an increase of 3.9 per cent on the year-earlier level. The company raised the seat load factor by 1.3 percentage points to a, in comparison to the industry, high 82.8 per cent. Austrian Airlines carried close to 8.8 million passengers, 2.1 per cent more than in the same term last time round. The company improved the utilization of their aircraft by 3.5 percentage points to a seat load factor of 77.7 per cent.
Volumes at Lufthansa Cargo fell by 8.9 per cent in the first nine months of the present year. During the term, the cargo carrier in the Lufthansa Group carried a total of 1.3 million tonnes of freight and mail. Nevertheless, due to a strict capacity management, Lufthansa Cargo was able to keep the utilization of the aircraft on a high level of 69 per cent.
The business figures of the Lufthansa Group in the first nine months of 2012 will be released on 31 October 2012 and will be available for download from 7.30 CET at www.lufthansa.com/investor-relations.
