Every year, the Three Cities? International Hotel School holds a Bursary Competition for Matric students in Johannesburg, Durban, and Cape Town. Only one student from each city wins a bursary valued at R180?000 to study any IHS programme they wish.
Finalists and Judges – Durban
This year, the competition began in May and was held at each of the IHS branches in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban. Only five finalists were chosen in each region to compete in a five-day Boot Camp that involved learning and hands-on experience where each student involved was challenged in various hospitality departments.
In Durban, the Boot Camp was held at The Gateway Hotel, a member of the Three Cities Group from Sunday 30th September to Friday 5th October. The final day saw a number of judges coming together to determine who would take home the coveted bursary.
?And the hospitality studies bursary goes to…
After much deliberation on the final day, the winner of fully paid tuition fees ? for any International Hotel School programme, valued up to R180?000 ? was Michael Greef from Kingsway High School.

Michael was overjoyed when his name was announced as the winner of the bursary.
?To be honest it?s only just sinking in! I’ve still got this giant smile that I can’t seem to shake, it feels so amazing knowing that I can study at IHS with this Bursary! As soon as I got home I just let out this brilliant shout of joy! I’m just going to make the very best of it and do my best in all aspects of my studies to continue making people proud. Also I’m so grateful to all the parties involved as this is like handing me the key to my entire future and now it?s up to me to open the doors.
What made the day even more interesting was that the competition had a twist. Due to the potential that each student showed in their various departments, the judges felt that they had to give the other students something extra to congratulate them on their efforts.

Natasha Benton was awarded 35% off her fees, Tayla Kriel was awarded 25% off, Nikita Maxwell was awarded 20% off, and Mon? Jansen Van Vuuren was awarded 15% off her fees ? which has never been done before in previous years.
With the competition being a tremendous success, we can proudly say that we?re delighted to have such enthusiastic pupils wanting to study through our school and look forward to seeing these students in the future. We?re also excited to welcome Michael on board to study with us after he matriculates!
