STR: Atlanta tops US weekly hotel performance

HENDERSONVILLE, Tennessee?Atlanta?s hotel industry reported the largest growth in average daily rate and revenue per available room during the week of 31 March-6 April 2013, according to data from STR, parent company of HotelNewsNow.com.

Atlanta hosted the NCAA Men?s Final Four basketball games 6 April, which helped the market achieve increases in all three performance metrics. Atlanta?s ADR rose 30.2% to $100.76, its RevPAR jumped 66% to $68.80 and its occupancy increased 27.5% to 68.3%.

Overall, the U.S. hotel industry?s occupancy was up 7.7% to 63.8%, ADR rose 3.2% to $108.12 and RevPAR increased 11.2% to $69.03.

St. Louis reported the largest occupancy increase, rising 29.9% to 61.6%. Orlando, Florida (-6% to 84.9%), and Norfolk-Virginia Beach, Virginia (-4% to 57.7%), reported the largest occupancy decreases for the week.

Three markets other than Atlanta experienced double-digit ADR increases: Oahu Island, Hawaii (+18% to $213.42); St. Louis (+16.1% to $89.59); and Anaheim-Santa Ana, California (+15% to $132.43). New Orleans fell 12.9% in ADR to $137.17, reporting the only double-digit decrease in that metric.

Five markets other than Atlanta achieved RevPAR increases of more than 20%: St. Louis (+50.9% to $55.15); Anaheim-Santa Ana (+26.2% to $108.90); Houston (+25.7% to $67.67); Minneapolis-St. Paul (+25.1% to $54.75); and Oahu Island (+24.9% to $167.15). New Orleans reported the only double-digit RevPAR decrease, falling 16.1% to $91.12.

Among the chain-scale segments, the upper-midscale segment rose 9.6% in occupancy to 65.1%, reporting the largest increase in that metric, followed by the upscale segment (+8.3% to 71.9%) and the midscale segment (+8.3% to 58.1%).

The upper-upscale segment achieved the largest ADR increase, rising 5.4% to $158.82, followed by the upscale segment with a 3.7% increase to $121.51.

Four segments experienced double-digit RevPAR increases: the upper-upscale segment (+12.5% to $113.89); the upscale segment (+12.3% to $87.42); the upper-midscale segment (+12.3% to $64.15); and the independent segment (+10.6% to $64.64).

None of the chain-scale segments reported decreases in the three key performance metrics for the week.
