Aussies love to travel and this year they plan to spend double the global average, according to a TripAdvisor survey.
According to the travel site’s TripBarometer survey, the annual global average spend on travel is $5498 but in 2014 Australian travellers plan to spend an average of $13,831.
The accommodation and traveller survey showed a rise in plans made by Australian travellers for both domestic and international travel – 90 per cent planned to travel domestically, up from 85 per cent in 2013 and 91 per cent were planning to travel overseas, a rise from 74 per cent.
The results paint an optimistic outlook for the travel and tourism industry, with the proportion of people planning to travel more up across almost all markets.
Globally, 90 per cent of travellers are planning domestic trips and 77 per cent plan to travel internationally.
Australian businesses are positive, with three in four hoteliers optimistic about their own profitability, but employment prospects in the industry are low, with just one in five global hoteliers planning to hire staff.
The proportion of global businesses planning to open new properties has dropped to 14 per cent from 17 per cent in 2013.
